The CDC plans to cut its biggest health survey to 150 questions, and drop questions used to count people with disabilities.

The National Health Interview Survey would go from 482 adult questions to 150 under a redesign proposed in August. The draft drops the questions on hearing aids, fatigue, cognition and mobility aids. Advocates say the result would undercount people with disabilities, and a paper co-authored by CDC statisticians suggests the survey could miss 75% of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

What it means at home. This survey is where the numbers behind programs come from. Fewer people counted usually means fewer programs funded.

BenefitsOctober 9, 2026

A Trump Account could cost a child with a disability their SSI at 18.

The new accounts for children born 2025 to 2028 start with $1,000 from the federal government. The balance does not count against SSI's asset limit while the child is a minor, but the full balance counts from the 18th birthday, and the limit is $2,000, unchanged for nearly forty years. At 4% growth the seed alone passes the limit by 18. A one-time transfer into an ABLE account is allowed at 17.

What it means at home. If your child may need SSI as an adult, plan the ABLE transfer now, before 17, or hold off on the account until the asset limit changes.

Researchers propose a shared definition of "profound autism."

More than 70 researchers, clinicians, caregivers and autistic people reached consensus over two rounds of voting. The proposed research definition: an autism diagnosis, age 8 or older, adaptive skills well below age level, a need for adult supervision for safety and daily care, and either an IQ below 50 or little spoken language beyond single words or set phrases.

What it means at home. A research definition is not a diagnosis you will be given, but it is the group most studies have left out, and a shared definition is how that changes.

85% of disability service providers are short-staffed. More than half turned away new referrals.

524 providers across all 50 states answered ANCOR's 2026 survey on the direct support workforce. 85% reported moderate or severe staffing shortages in the past year, 55% turned away new referrals, 29% cut programs or services, and 48% were weighing more cuts.

What it means at home. If the day program or respite provider near you has a waitlist, this is a large part of why.
